From our cave dwelling ancestors who snacked on sweet honey comb through to the Ancient Mayan civilization who used chocolate as currency and all the way up to modern day candy mega-corporations that have profits in the multi-billions of dollars, humans have always had a sweet tooth. To recall an after school trip to the neighbourhood corner store with two dimes in our pocket to fill a paper bag of penny candy is not a difficult thing to do. It’s a Timeless tradition that not only still thrives today with a much newer generation, but it is also big business. Very big business! Those penny candy sales now profit into the hundreds of millions of dollars, employing thousands of people offering hundreds of different products, flavours, shapes and textures. As well is the equally big business of merchandising and branding. Brightly coloured packaging with equally colourful characters have become almost iconic in today’s Western culture and you need only look at the racks of any convenience store to know that. 

There is however a new “old” way of selling candy that goes back to a time where candy was proudly displayed in glass jars where only the colour and shape of the product was used to sell its appeal. Many C-Stores are taking sales of penny candy to a whole new level by utilizing the tried, tested and proven use of gravity feed bulk candy bins because now more than ever is the concern for providing a sanitary method of merchandising bulk candy.
